Each year I take a few of my best Romney fleeces to local mill, Diamond Fibres to be carefully processed in to beautiful, semi lustrous, semi worsted, light Double Knit yarn.  In 2017 I also had some limited edition Sock Yarn produced and I now have a limited quantity of Romney X Black Welsh Mountain DK yarn.

Each 100g skein is approximately 250 yards long with a WPI of 14.  It must be handwashed or dry cleaned only.  It is slightly rustic, fantastic to work with and also dyes very well.

The remainder and main haul of my wool is sold to the British Wool Marketing Board.

Diamond Fibres

is based in Horam, East Sussex, 40 minutes drive away.  Roger Mobsby started setting up this mill in the 1980's and now has customers internationally.  He is able to take small quantities of wool, unlike most other mills, and can create yarns bespoke to the customers requirements.

I feel it is very important to use local services and suppliers so I am thrilled that Diamond Fibres is on my doorstep and has also been happy for me to visit and see my wool being processed.

In my first year, 2016 I took 4 fleeces weighing approximately 12kg.  10kg of this is usable and after washing out the dirt and lanolin, carding, combing and spinning it, I received 6.13kg of finished yarn in the form of 52 x 100g skeins.

I have made a short film following the wool from shearing to finished yarn.  Click the link to watch.
